MINNEAPOLIS -- In the wake of a blowout loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Minnesota Twins focused on sending the NL club back to California with a pair of losses. Dan Orlovsky Cyber Monday Jersey . Thanks to Scott Baker, they were able to achieve just that. Baker struck out nine while pitching into the eighth inning and Ben Revere had two hits to help the Twins win the three-game series with a 1-0 victory Wednesday. Baker (6-5) allowed six hits and walked one in 7 1-3 innings, dropping his ERA to 3.15. Minnesota rebounded from Monday nights 15-0 drubbing with a 6-4 win on Tuesday, then gutted out a squeaker in the finale. "Winning two out of three after getting blown out in the first one is a nice way to come back," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Proud of the guys, so well go from there. Baker sure has found a groove at home, going 3-1 with a 0.29 ERA in his last four starts at Target Field. He struck out 10 in eight scoreless innings against the Padres on June 18. "Ive really felt good the past four or five outings and three of them happened to be at home," Baker said. "Im making good two-strike pitches right now and been able to finish some hitters. If I do that I feel pretty good about it." Rubby De La Rosa (3-3) also was impressive, giving up just one run and six hits in seven innings for Los Angeles. After hammering out 25 hits on Monday night, the Dodgers couldnt string anything together against Baker and two relievers. With the tying run on base in the eighth, Glen Perkins fanned Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp to end the inning and Matt Capps finished the seven-hitter to earn his 13th save. The Dodgers left eight runners on base and their big boppers -- Ethier and Kemp -- combined to go 1 for 8 with five strikeouts. "We throw up a ton of runs, you know, and then you get good pitching and we dont put up any runs," first-year Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "Its pretty much been the tale of our season. Really, for the most part, we havent been able to match up what we are doing as far as putting up runs and not giving any up." Revere hit a leadoff triple in the first and scored on Tsuyoshi Nishiokas groundout. Minnesota left the bases loaded in the second inning, and De La Rosa settled into a pitching duel with Baker after that. The right-hander walked 15 batters in his previous four starts, but showed much better control against the free-swinging Twins. He had two walks Wednesday, including one intentional pass. Baker was even better, so good that Gardenhire sent him out to start the eighth with a pitch count of 108. Baker struck out Tony Gwynn Jr. before walking Casey Blake. Baker finished with a career-high 119 pitches, something the Twins could afford with an extra day of rest for him coming up. "Hes confident and hes attacking," Gardenhire said. "I dont think he worries about too much out there. He just goes and attacks." Gardenhire went to the lefty Perkins, who got Ethier looking for the sluggers third strikeout. Then the red-hot Kemp chased a breaking ball low and away to end the inning. "He used his breaking ball really well on Ethier," Gardenhire said. "Thats one of the more dangerous guys in the world and then youve got Kemp who is right at the top of the MVP list over there and he went right at him too." The Dodgers just turned the halfway point on the season, playing in their 82nd game on Wednesday, and Mattingly called the first half "a rocky road." The inconsistency on the field was overshadowed by an ugly dispute between owner Frank McCourt and Major League Baseball that spilled into bankruptcy court this week. MLB is accusing McCourt of siphoning off more than $100 million in club revenue to help fund a lavish lifestyle with wife and former team CEO Jamie McCourt, who is asking for half of his assets in divorce proceedings. But the Dodgers argue that commissioner Bud Seligs refusal to approve a broadcast rights agreement with Fox Sports is what is causing the cash flow problem. On Tuesday, McCourt gained approval from a judge to enter into a US$150-million bankruptcy financing arrangement to keep the team running. The former undisputed welterweight champion has been working with Pernell Whitaker, one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters ever, to prepare for his matchup against Kaizer Mabuza at the Prudential Centers AmeriHeatlh Pavilion. The winner will walk away with the vacant IBF junior welterweight title. "Pernell has been a great influence. I think were going to Def Comedy Jam after this," Judah joked earlier this week. "Not only has Pernell Whitaker brought great skills to me, but he tweaked my whole world. "He also brought humour, entertainment and kept the camp happy." Judah had been trained by his father, Yoel, throughout his 14-year career, so the decision to bring Whitaker in didnt happen on a whim. But hes also quite familiar with Whitaker, the Hall of Famer who retired nearly a decade ago. They became friends after Judah signed with promotional company Main Events in 1996, the same company that represented Whitaker from 1984-2001. Judah admits that he idolized Whitaker, and their styles -- they are both left-handers with great speed and movement -- are quite similar. "He brought a lot of excitement, joy and fun," said Judah, who has adopted his own happy-go-lucky attitude during the latter part of his career. "As a young kid I mimicked and idolized Pernell Whitaker coming up, and watched him and Mike Tyson," Judah said. "Those two styles are different. "You got one deep to the body, you got one aggressive fighter, so I mixed the both of them in and I got Zab Judah." Judah and Whitaker spent about six weeks together in Las Vegas, with Whitaker -- who earned the nickname "Sweet Pea" years ago -- focusing primarily on subtlety and defence. Those words havent always been part of the Judah vernacular. "The name of the sport is called boxing. You dont call it knockout," Whitaker said. "Hes got all the finesse, and finesse and speed brings power. "All the old habitss Zab once had are no longer there. Cheap Bolton Wanderers Jerseys. Hes listening. You guys are going to see, defence makes offence." The partnership has also been like a family reunion for Kathy Duva, who runs Main Events. Whitaker was among the first fighters she was ever involved with, and Judah left the company for several years before returning for his most recent fights. "I was privileged to start my career with Pernell Whitaker. I got to sit ringside for almost every fight he had with my heart in my throat the whole time," Duva said. "Zab is very privileged to now have Pernell working with him." Judah (40-6, 27 KOs) will be facing an unheralded and largely untested fighter from South Africa in Mabuza, who was a 14-1 underdog when he beat Kendall Holt last year to become the No. 1 contender for the IBF title. Mabuza (23-6-3, 14 KOs) may have a pedestrian record -- especially compared to Judah -- with virtually no marquee names on it, but hes also ripped off eight straight victories and comes into the fight with nothing to lose. A victory and hes a world champion. A loss and hes headed back to anonymity. "Its an honour to me to fight a person like Zab Judah," Mabuza said, adding: "I think he had his time. Hes a former world champion. I think this is my time, because Im still hungry." Judah seems hungry these days, too. He realizes that he didnt dedicate himself enough to boxing and, as a result, lost several fights he could have won. He returned to Main Events with a renewed focus on fighting the best at 140 pounds before calling it a career, and hes hoping that earning a title trinket sets up one or two more big fights. This time, with "Sweet Pea" standing by him in the corner. "You know, theres a myth about Zabs going to fade and all that," Judah said, turning to Whitaker. "For this fight, I went to the master right here. "Hes known for going 12 rounds, hes known for being the best fighter out there. I took what hes got and put it with what Ive got and yall know what thats going to bring? Its going to be magic." ' ' '
