OAKLAND, Calif. -- Drew Pomeranz approached his fill-in start the same way he has every outing in relief this season. Maybe thats why he had so much more success than hes used to as a starter. Pomeranz pitched five scoreless innings for his second win in his past 20 starts and the Oakland Athletics salvaged a split of a doubleheader by beating the Seattle Mariners 2-0 in the nightcap Wednesday. "It felt a little weird at first," Pomeranz said. "I was trying to take the same mentality Ive had all year. Ive had some success doing that, staying in the stretch, keeping things as simple as I can out there. Just tried to treat it like I was coming into a game." The Mariners overcame a shaky start from ace Felix Hernandez to win the opener 6-4 on Justin Smoaks two-out single in the 10th inning. Despite the loss in the nightcap, Seattle heads home satisfied following a 7-2 road trip that also included stops in New York and Houston. "To come out of this series 7-2 is just an unbelievable trip in my opinion," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "Just phenomenal. I was very proud of the team and how they played. We put ourselves in a pretty good position." Yoenis Cespedes homered for the second straight day and Craig Gentry scored from first on a single by Jed Lowrie to help the As snap a six-game home losing streak. Pomeranz (2-1) was sharp in his first major league start since last July, allowing two hits and no walks in five innings with five strikeouts as he mixed in his change-up for the first time all season. Pomeranz won just one of his final 19 starts with Colorado, leading to an off-season trade to the As where he has pitched well in relief. But he stepped when the As needed another starter for the doubleheader and got the win. "I couldnt have expected any more than that," manager Bob Melvin aid. "Pretty fantastic for a guy who hasnt started a game for us in spring or this season." The As took the lead in the third. Gentry ran on the pitch from first base on a full count with two outs when Lowries popup fell between left fielder Cole Gillespie and shortstop Brad Miller for a hit. Cespedes added to the lead in the fourth with a solo homer off Erasmo Ramirez (1-4), who was called up from Triple-A Tacoma earlier in the day to make the start. Ramirez allowed two runs in six innings. Dan Otero, who allowed the go-ahead hit in the 10th inning of the opener, pitched three scoreless innings of relief and Jim Johnson finished the three-hitter for his second save and first since losing the closers job a month ago. "Thats what hes used to doing -- 1-2-3 today," Melvin said. "That was huge." This was just the second traditional doubleheader in Oakland in the past 16 years, with the other in 2011. The makeup game was necessary because a game was postponed April 4 when the field was unplayable after there was no tarp on it overnight. Hernandez failed to strike out a batter for the first time Aug. 19, 2008, against the Chicago White Sox, ending a streak of 179 straight starts with at least one strikeout. He allowed four runs -- three earned -- and matched his career worst against Oakland by giving up 11 hits in 6 1-3 innings. "No strikeouts, not a good breaking ball, not a good change-up," Hernandez said. "Thats what happens when you dont have good stuff." Brandon Moss hit an RBI triple that capped a three-run seventh against Hernandez, but the As could not hold a late lead as Robinson Cano tied the game with an RBI single off Luke Gregerson in the eighth. Smoak gave the Mariners the lead when he hit a chopper off the glove of leaping first baseman Daric Barton for an RBI single off Otero in the 10th after Ryan Cook (0-1) left the game with a strained right forearm. Cook will have an MRI on Thursday but does not believe the injury is serious. Yoervis Medina (2-1) pitched the ninth for the win, and Fernando Rodney pitched the 10th for his ninth save in 10 chances. Oakland centre fielder Coco Crisp strained his neck in the opener crashing into the wall to make a leaping catch. He is expected to miss a few days. The Nets continued their winning ways Tuesday by sweeping a back-to-back set for the first time this season, beating the Orlando Magic 101-90 a night after routing the crosstown rival New York Knicks. Russ Grimm Jersey . Olivieri, at city hall to help kick off ticket sales for the Aug. 5-24 event to be held in four Canadian cities, said Wednesday that Canada has a new generation of talent on the rise that can make its name just as Sinclair did at the same event in 2002 in Edmonton. http://www.officialredskins.us.com/Customized.html . Bortles, one of three quarterbacks vying to be the first taken in the NFL Draft in May alongside Bridgewater and Johnny Manziel, helped his cause by impressing scouts with a clean performance at the UCF Pro Day Wednesday, according to reports. John Riggins Redskins Jersey . -- Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was arrested outside Kansas City over the weekend on charges of speeding and possessing marijuana, throwing his status for a pivotal AFC West showdown against the Denver Broncos into question. Kirk Cousins . The 27-year-old Niskanen, the more offensive-minded of the pair of defencemen joining the Capitals, got a $40.25 million, seven-year contract. "Its a very big commitment from Washington. Thats no small thing. Youre talking a seven-year commitment for a very substantial amount of money," said Niskanen, who got married Saturday. BERLIN -- Kevin-Prince Boateng scored late for Schalke to beat Wolfsburg 2-1 and move fourth in the Bundesliga on Saturday, while Hamburger SV slipped further into crisis with a 3-0 loss at Hoffenheim. Boateng scored in the 81st minute following some good interplay between Leon Goretzka and Roman Neustaedter, restoring the home sides lead after Maximilian Arnold equalized for 10-man Wolfsburg in the 65th. Felipe Santana opened the scoring in the ninth, when Boatengs effort rebounded off his shoulder and squirmed inside the post after a corner. Wolfsburgs task was made more difficult when midfielder Daniel Caligiuri was sent off in the 50th. TV replays suggested he had made a remark to the linesman. "Im delighted with the win," Boateng said. "It was hugely important. The fans got to see a good match, they had to fret for a little bit, but that keeps us all young." Borussia Moenchengladbach lost 3-1 at Hannover in the late game, missing out on the chance to reclaim fourth place. "Its not undeserved, the 3-1," Moenchengladbach coach Lucien Favre said. "We lost the ball too often, didnt move enough. They played well, countered well, theyre very dangerous here." Artjoms Rudnevs opened the scoring in the 57th when Szabolcs Huszti crossed to the far post. It was the Latvian strikers second goal in as many games since switching from Hamburg. Huszti also created Hannovers second in the 82nd, with another precise cross for Mame Biram Diouf. Peniel Kokou Mlapa pulled one back two minutes later to set up a frenetic finish, but Diouf sealed the result in the 89th to maintain new Hannover coach Tayfun Korkuts winning start. Earlier, Bayer Leverkusen left it late to come from behind and beat Stuttgart 2-1 and consolidate second place. Eren Derdiyoks 84th-minute header condemned Stuttgart to its fourth successive defeat. Moritz Leitner opened the scoring for Stuttgart with a fine strike to the top left corner in the 12th, 14 minutes before Stefan Kiessling equalized by beating a defender and curling his shot inside the far post. "Its like Groundhog Day for me," Stuttgart coach Thomas Schneider said. "Wee take the lead like in the last games and then give the game away.dddddddddddd Altogether a bitter afternoon for us." Mainz defeated Freiburg 2-0, and Augsburg beat 10-man Werder Bremen 3-1. Hamburg, the only side to have played every season of the Bundesliga, offered little to suggest it would escape its first relegation in slumping to its fifth successive loss. "Our biggest problem is that were conceding goals too easily," said Hamburg coach Bert van Marwijk, whose side has the worst defence in the league. Roberto Firmino fired Hoffenheim ahead in the fourth, though TV replays suggested a hint of offside when Kevin Volland played him through. Poor defending allowed Niklas Suele to make it 2-0 with a header from Sejad Salihovics cross at the end of the first half, and the visiting fans began leaving when Andreas Beck made it 3-0 on the hour. Hamburg is in the relegation playoff place and will end the weekend in a direct relegation place if Nuremberg beats Hertha Berlin on Sunday. "Were facing criticism, were playing catastrophically. The coach cant do anything about that," Hamburg midfielder Rafael van der Vaart said. "We understand his system. Its the quality thats lacking at the end of the day." Goals from South Koreans Park Joo-ho and Koo Ja-cheol in the 25th and 86th respectively were enough for Mainz to give Freiburg its 10th defeat of the season and leave it just one point ahead of Hamburg. Augsburgs seven game unbeaten run is a club record. It started badly against Bremen when Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker headed Zlatko Junuzovics corner into his own net in the third minute, but Tobias Werner equalized with a deflected shot in the 11th, and the visitors were reduced to 10 men before the break when Santiago Garcia received his second yellow card for a lunge. The Argentine was incensed with the decision after appearing to make no contact with Matthias Ostrzolek. Halil Altintop gave Augsburg the lead with a fine volley in the 49th and Andre Hahn capitalized on a defensive mix-up to secure the win six minutes later. Runaway league leader Bayern Munich hosts Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday. ' ' '
