I cant think of anyone that deserves to be a head coach more than new Roughriders coach Greg Marshall. David Harris Black Friday Jersey . It can really create resentment, animosity and even a jealousy that sometimes takes years to diffuse. And its natural and normal to have these situations arise every now and then. Coaching in football is tough and completely different than playing. In our eight-team league, every CFL head coach has paid the price to be where they are right now, and each team should benefit from their experience. I think Marshalls greatest asset will be that he knows the value of praise and the effect of criticism. As a former player – and a good one at that – he will know instinctively how to motivate and challenge. He will keep his players confident and comfortable and yet insecure and anxious at the same time. And its a hard balance to create, because if you make the environment too enjoyable you do not get the most out of everybody. And in the extreme opposite, if everything is too tense and demanding, players become introverted due to fear and the atmosphere is one of all for me and more for me. All of a sudden you have 42 individuals that lose the desire to perform as a team. Marshalls biggest challenge may not be the technical side of football as much as it will be coming up with 18 pregame speeches that are completely different in 18 ways. Now, I dont mean speeches in the classic terms of true information dissertation, more of making each game different in purpose and clarity. Yes, in professional football it is not necessary, but it is respected by the players when the head coach has something to say thats intelligent, unique, motivating and genuine before you take the football field to start the game. Playoff speeches are easy. Game 14 on a cold October night after losing three in a row is tough. It is a talent held by very few, but a way to transfer effective purpose and focus each and every week. As far as a team, the Riders will be as good as any team in the West and throughout the league. With Darian Durant at quarterback and the receivers they have, they can always play come-from-behind football and win. With Richie Hall as the defensive coordinator and Marshalls influence, the Riders will be fundamentally sound in all aspects of the game. A key question is special teams. Saskatchewan will have to cover more effectively, and if Tristan Jackson can find his form, he could be more important than any positional player. The return game for the Riders has to become a weapon. I remember about 10 years ago watching a Riders game, looking into the stands and seeing seats with no people. And I remember last year being at a Roughriders game and seeing there were not enough seats for all the people. Jim Hobson and his team has created a home team environment that is a home team advantage. This upcoming season will be another good year for Saskatchewan Roughrider football.
